According to Beverly Hills Otolaryngologist, Dr. Babak Larian, a new study published in the November issue of “Archives of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery” proves to be a valuable resource for educating patients about throat cancer. The study reported that overall throat cancer deaths in the United States are decreasing, however, among some groups the death rate is actually unchanged or increasing.1

“While the throat cancer death rate is decreasing, this study shows that there are groups who still lack education about the link between smoking and throat cancer. It is important for health professionals to continue to encourage cancer screenings and warn patients about the dangers of smoking,” explained Dr. Larian.

The study found that between 1993 and 2007, overall mortality rates from throat and mouth cancer decreased among black and white men and women. The largest decrease in death rates, nearly -5%, was among black males who graduated from high school. Alternatively, the study reported that among white males as a group, death rates from throat and mouth cancers actually increased by almost 2%, regardless of education level.

The authors of the study attribute an increase in education about the dangers of smoking as one of the reasons for the decrease in morality rates. “Throat cancer can be a very debilitating disease if it is not caught and treated at early stages. People who smoke are putting themselves at a greater risk of developing throat cancer. Hopefully, both patients and doctors can reflect on this study and take preventive throat cancer education more seriously, especially among the white male population,” said Dr. Larian.
