Flagship Biosciences Launches Quantitative Hematopathology Services for Translational Research and Therapeutic Drug Development

Image analysis identified plasma cells in proximity to vasculature and evaluates gene expression profile differences

Flagstaff, AZ (PRWEB) December 09, 2011

Many pharmaceutical, biotech and academic clinical trials organizations require robust quantitative approaches to evaluating tissue, blood or bone marrow samples in hematology clinical trials or to develop efficacy models. Hematopathology analyses are currently largely based on manual counting or qualitative assessments. Flagship has developed quantitative image analysis based assessments using whole slide imaging to complement pathologist microscopic evaluation. One of these techniques will be demonstrated in an abstract at the American Society of Hematology 2011 for characterizing the special distribution of plasma cells in multiple myeloma and their microenvironment in bone marrow using a novel whole slide image analysis technology. Additional applications encompass the characterization of various types of malignant and reactive hematopoietic cell lineages including stem cells and their proximity to bone, vessel, or their relation to other cell types.

“The ability to conduct advanced image analysis approaches in bone marrow / lymph node samples, blood smears, and other common hematopathology samples in hematology offers exciting quantitative information to better characterize therapeutic compounds currently under development in the industry,” said Dr. Mohamed Salama, Associate Professor at the University of Utah, Assistant Medical Director of Hematopathology at ARUP Reference Laboratory, and lead author on the ASH presentation.

Improved quantitation techniques in myeloma and other myeloproliferative disorders is a growth area for whole slide analysis approaches. The technique of identifying and quantifying individual cell types in consideration of their proximity to biological components like vessels and bone has widespread applications in studying other areas of the cancer stem cell environment. A related approach in quantitative hematopathology, “Plasma Cell Spatial Distribution Pattern Correlates with Unique Molecular Profiling Signature” was recently presented at the Pathology Visions conference earlier this month, where it won the people’s choice best poster award.

Flagship Biosciences delivers tissue analytics services to biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device clients.
